I've got two new superheroes to share with yall this week. Batman was used to describe "self discipline" to my students. Mr. Terrific is up this month to embody "fairness".
I used the outstanding Frank Quitely splash page from Batman and Robin as reference for this picture. I don't have the angles as dynamic or the characters as defined (of course) but I like this picture a good deal. I love Damien as Robin and his costume is outstanding. I really messed up Batman's face but I had fun putting down so much black and drawing two figures in one sketch.
Mr. Terrific may be my favorite of the sketches I've done so far. His abdomen and jacket look realistically rendered I think and everything feels in proportion. I'm even pretty happy with the lettering down the arms of the jacket. His fingers are as mangled as I draw everyones (faux-Kirbyesque with no form or grace) and the blacks on the jacket aren't very well done. I still feel like it works really well as a whole, and strangely enough my kids have really gravitated toward Mr. Terrific over a lot of the more well known heroes. Come to think of it, they were pretty intrigued by Concrete as well. Perhaps the biggest thing keeping kids away from comics is exposure.
Lastly I wanted to show you a portrait a student of mine drew for me. I thought it was great.
Thanks for reading and I'll see you next week.
