Cover art is one of the aspects of making a book that really works my brain. The goal is to catch the readers eye and make them want to open your book but you also want the art to be representational of the story inside. On top of that you have other design elements to deal with like your title logo and the almighty bar code. All and all it can get pretty overwhelming.
Despite that I always get excited when it's time to work on a new cover because I get to experiment more so then I do with interior work. In the cover below you can see that I took a very design oriented approach in which I'm trying to use a lot of negative space. My goal is to direct the readers eye to what I want them to see by taking out everything else. I'm not sure how well it works but I'm happy with it and the best way to learn is to simply try it out for yourself.
My next step is to paint it but I'll leave that for another day.
